The Starbucks lease was up, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority decided to stick to its policy of giving priority to independent NYC businesses, including in the downstairs food court, which features locals such as Junior’s and Magnolia Bakery. The Apple Retail Store on the mezzanine is a visible exception to the rule of local and independent.
Cafe Grumpy will take over the Starbucks space on the east side of the terminal. The Starbucks location on the terminal’s west side is staying open.
Cafe Grumpy happens to be owned by a woman, Caroline Bell, who told CNN Money “this is a huge and exciting endeavor for us as an independent business.”
Grumpy serves as the place of employment for the main character in HBO’s popular series Girls. This will be the sixth Cafe Grumpy in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Click here for locations.
