Ride a vintage NYC subway train this Sunday or next, Dec. 15 and 22, 2013. It’s the annual Holiday Nostalgia Train from the MTA. Ride back in time in cars that were in service between 1932 and 1977. You remember — light bulbs, woven wicker seats, ceiling fans and windows you could open before the days of air conditioning.
Holiday Nostalgia Trains are shuttling between between which will run along the Line between Long Island City, Queens and Lower Manhattan, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., making all line stops, and you can use your modern MetroCard for the fare, just like any other subway ride.
Or, take a ride on a vintage bus. During the week, weather depending, ride models that operated from the 1950s to the 1980s on the M42 route across 42nd Street, river to river. Everything on thse vintage busses is original except the bus operator and the fare box. Ralph Kramden is no longer with us and the fare boxes accept MetroCards. The buses, which are not wheelchair accessible, operate between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday through December 2 to 20. However, they will not run in the event of rain and snow, because they are old and catch cold easily.
Take the kids. Take grammie and pops. Happy holiday riding.
