As always, there are lots of free, frugal and cheap family-friendly events on the calendar in NYC this August weekend, and as always, nothing here costs more than $10. Be cheap and have fun in NYC with NYC on the Cheap:
Inspired by the U. S. Open to improve your own tennis game? Get FREE tips from tennis pros in Central Park on Sunday, 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the Central Park Tennis Center. The event is sponsored by Lacoste, official apparel sponsor of CityParks Tennis, which provides free tennis instruction to more than 7,000 young New Yorkers each year throughout the five boroughs. Event website, or call (718) 760-6999.
Also in Central Park, FREE movie screenings, daily, through Monday, August 26th. This weekend’s offerings are family-friendly Hook (tonight), Silver Linings Playbook (tomorrow) and the classic Jack Nicholson horror film The Shining (Sunday). Screenings are rain or shine at 8 p.m., in between the Sheep Meadow and the 72nd St. Cross Drive. Bring a blanket or chair, and there’s FREE popcorn. Event website.
FREE kayaking continues this weekend on both the Hudson River and the East River. Borrow a kayak for 30 minutes at a time from the Downtown Boathouse, at Pier 96, at 56th Street. The colorful kayaks go out between 9 a.m. and 5:30 pm. There’s also a Downtown Boathouse location at Chambers St. and at 72nd St. In Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Bridge Boathouse operates between Piers 1 and 2 (across from the Pop-Up Pool) Saturdays only, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Check out New York City’s newly reopened Pier 42 on the Lower East Side, for public art installations and a picture postcard view of two of New York City’s most famous bridges, the Manhattan and the Williamsburg. Pier 42 sits between them, with entrances from the East River Greenway at Montgomery Street and through Corlears Hook Park at Cherry Street. Take the F train to East Broadway and walk toward the East River.
