See what’s planned for Governors Island in a special FREE “hard hat tour” this weekend of the 30 acres of new park and public spaces at the center of the island. Hard hats and vests will be provided, and participants must be wearing closed-toe shoes – no sandals or flip-flops. And no children under the age of 6 are permitted on the tour. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Tours begin and end at Liggett Arch. Tour times are 45 minutes each, and begin at 11:30 on Saturday and 3 pm. on Sunday. Your tour gides will be members of the Trust for Governors Island or members of the West 8 design team.
The new park will be called The Hills, offering sweeping 360 degree views of the Statue of Liberty, downtown Manhattan and more. Crain’s New York Business reports construction was kickstarted by a $15 million donation by Google billionaire Eric Schmidt and his wife Wendy.
