Reminder to sign up or support the NYC protest against female genital mutilation (FGM) in a 5K walk and demonstration on Saturday, September 15th. The Restoring the Rose Walkathon includes survivors of this horrifying violence against young women.
The Restoring the Rose event has two goals. First, to raise awareness of the plight of 140 million women worldwide. Every 16 seconds a girl is genitally mutilated somewhere in the world — including in the United States, where it is against the law and done in secret.
Second, to raise money for crucial medical supplies for a free hospital to provide refuge, treatment and genital reconstruction to victims of FGM in Africa and the Middle East.
The walk is in Riverside Park, from 72nd to 158th Streets along the Hudson River. Registration is FREE — click here to register on the Campaign Against Female Genital Mutilation organization website.
If you aren’t sure why you should participate, watch the short video about the horrors of FGM, against children as young as three years old, many of whom die because of the butchering in primitive, unsanitary conditions. You’ll be convinced.
Participants receive a Restoring the Rose walkathon T-shirt. Prizes will be awarded to the top three fundraisers and teams. Free food and beverages will be available to all walkers after the event, plus music and opportunities to meet with sponsors and celebrities who support CAGeM.
New Yorkers need to be made aware that New York has the second highest number of FGM victims after California, according to CAGeM. Give a voice to the voiceless.Help end this brutality, treat victims, and protect potential victims.
