The annual Harlem Week Swing Dance is one of the most popular events of the month-long “week” that celebrates one of NYC’s most famous and historic neighborhoods. Dance were swing began, at this event sponsored by the Harlem Swing Dance Society, Tuesday, August 14th from 7-11 PM.
You’ll be dancing to the music of Harlem greats including Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald. Admission is just $10, at the Lt. Kennedy Jr. Center, 34 West 134th St.
You don’t need a partner for swing dances like this, where strangers ask strangers to dance. Swing dancing is not a spectator sport — the idea is to get out on the dance floor and have fun.
And on Saturday, August 18th, Harlem Week celebrates the 50th anniversary of Jamaican independence, with a “Dancing in the Streets” festival, noon to 2 p.m., on 135th Stteet and Frederick Douglas Blvd. That’s FREE.
