This is not an April Fool’s joke. On April 1, 2012, New York State drops the 4% sales tax on clothing, shoes and other footwear costing $110 or less. This is great news for the 99% of New Yorkers who buy affordable clothing and footwear, especially for kids who seem to grow out of their jeans and sneakers before they wear out. The tax-free rule does not apply to handbags, but it does apply to disposable diapers, which the guys in Albany apparently consider to be clothing. It might be a good idea to print out and take with you, just in case an electronic cash register hasn’t been reprogrammed yet. So say goodbye to the 4% sales tax on clothing and footwear in New York State — again — because this exemption was in effect for a while a few years ago, taken away, and now it’s back.
