Gourmet Garage is closing its store at Broadway and 96th St. on the UWS, thanks to a greedy landlord who is tripling the rent. Not just doubling the rent — but tripling the rent, according to one of the store’s assistant managers. The store is due to close on Saturday, 12/24. As of last night, when I was in the store to do some routine grocery shopping, there are no signs in the windows announcing the closing, and no clearance prices even on perishable foods. The decision to close this Gourmet Garage location also may have been influenced by its location — in between two other gourmet and organic grocery stores that opened during 2011 — Trader Joe’s on 72nd St. and Broadway, and Wholefoods on 98th St. and Columbus Ave. But as great as Trader Joe’s and Wholefoods are, Gourmet Gourmet is something they are not — Gourmet Garage is a local, NYC-based company, which began in Soho as a fresh food wholsealer for NYC restaurants.
