The new Uniqlo flagship store on Fifth Avenue and 53rd St. opens Friday, October 7th, followed by another superstore on 34th Street off Broadway one week later, on Friday, October 14th. The Fifth Avenue location a humongous 89,000 square feet, and ranks as the largest retail space on the avenue — larger than Bergdorf Goodman a few blocks north. The Uniqlo at 666 Fifth Avenue is just one block from H&M, so it will be the battle of the imports — inexpensive designer fashions from Japan’s Uniqlo vs. inexpensive deisgner fashions from Sweden’s H&M, just one block from H&M. The 34th St. location goes up against Macy’s across the street. Uniqlo also is keeping open its first NCY location, in Soho. The two new Uniqlo stores are good business for NYC — the company has hired more than 1,000 people to staff the two new stores.
