Starbucks has begun covering up electric outlets in Manhattan locations, to prevent customers from using Starbucks as a mobile office and sitting on their laptops or tablets for hours. It’s called “computer parking”. The implication is this — please leave when you have drained your laptop battery and your latte, and make room for other customers. The blog Starbucks Gossip calls it a passive aggressive way of dealing with the selfish who spread their work on a counter or table and sit all day for $1.85 and free refills, hogging outlets and seats, and the posting has generated a lot of comments, pro and con. Maybe it’s time to re-instate the sign-in to get one-hour limit on free wi-fi that Starbucks eliminated a year ago. What do you think?
