Tuesday, April 26th — The beautiful pink and white cherry blossoms are in full bloom at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. There’s FREE admission every Tuesday, but this week is extra special. In addition to Cherry Blossom Viewing, this free Tuesday falls in the middle of the traditional Japanese celebration of hanami, or cherry blossom season, which runs through May 1st. So grab your camera and your kid and enjoy the the trees in the height of their bloom.
Sakura Matsuri, the garden’s 30th-annual cherry blossom and Japanese cultural festival, begins just a few days later, on April 30. This year’s cherry blossom festival is both important and bittersweet because it follows so closely after the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan. There will be a special fund-raising event at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden on April 30th and May 1st to help raise funds for reconstruction efforts. More about that in a future posting on NYC on the Cheap.
