The estate of the great, legendary movie star, singer and civil rights pioneer Lena Horne is being auctioned on Wednesday, February 23rd. From Saturday, February 19th until Tuesday, February 22nd, you can see her elegant costume jewelry, accessories, evening gowns and other clothing, silver, furniture, books and other memorabilia at Doyle New York auction gallery, where the auction is being held.
The viewing is free, and there is also a beautifully illustrated $25 souvenir catalogue you can buy. The collection includes jewelry by Chanel, trunks by Louis Vuitton, and photographs and paintings by James Van Der Zee and Charles Alston. Doyle New York is at 175 East 87th Street on the UES.
The incredibly talented and amazingly beautiful Lena Horne was born in Brooklyn in 1917, and passed away late last year, one of the many New Yorkers we lost in 2010. She began her professional life at the age of sixteen, in the chorus line at Harlem’s Cotton Club, before moving to Hollywood to star in mostly musicals. Beginning in the 1950s, she focused increasingly on live performance, and became one of the world’s top nightclub entertainers.
