It is against the law in NYC to drive with one hand on the wheel and the other on your iPhone, BlackBerry, Android or other cellphone. Also dangerous. Which is why it is against the law. If you are caught, it is a $130 fine. The NYC Police Dept. is cracking down on illegal cellphone use today, Oct. 26th. On a usual day, the NYPD hands out 600 cellphone citations to drivers. This past spring, on a similar one-day cellphone crackdown, NYPD Blue handed out ten times as many sumonses. It’s not about the money. It’s about pedestrian safety and the safety of other vehicles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Council (NHTSA), one-quarter of all vehicle deaths are due to distracted driving. That includes being distracted by one-hand cellphone use.
