Today we feature a look at the Unisphere, the most visible legacy of that long ago look into the future, as part of our focus on Queens this week.
Made entirely of stainless steel, this massive sculpture of the Earth is 140 feet high and weighs 380 tons.
It is also the largest such Earth on earth, dwarfing copycat sculptures including the one at the Trump hotel in Columbus Circle.
The Unisphere is also a movie star, making appearances in movies including “Men in Black” and “Iron Man 2.” Plus, it’s been in countless family photos, in which visitors position themselves so that they appear to be holding the world in their hands.
The Unisphere is in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, outside the Queens Museum of Art.
