http://www.nyconthecheap.comThe world’s top cross country bike riders — many of whom are competing in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London later this year — are competing at Windham Mountain this weekend, June 28th to July 1st, when the World Cup series makes its only stop in the USA.  Both US and international riders will be training and racing on the slopes, now that bikers and hikers have taken over Windham’s the slopes from winter’s skiers and snowboarders.  Windham is the eighth stop on a tour that also has visited Houffalize, Begium and includes La Bresse, France; Val di Sole, Italy; Fort William, Britain; Mt. Sainte-Anne, Canada; Val d’Isere, France; and Hafjell, Norway.  Click here for more information on riders and the specific race schedule.  Windham is in the Catskills, around two hours from Times Square, depending on traffic.

There’s still plenty of snow in the Catskills, and the chairlifts are still running daily, with spring skiing deals and discounts.

Windham Mountain Resort — You can ski and snowboard free for the rest of the season by purchasing a season pass — for next season — this season.  In addition to an early bird discount, you get a free pass for the rest of this season.  Current  passholders who renew now receive two free lift tickets good for this season or early next season, through December 23, 2011.  renewing for next season will receive 2 any day Lift Tickets good for this season or next season until 12/23/11.

Belleayre Mountain — Lift tickets are $20 on Wednesdays and $25 on Fridays for the rest of the season.

Race Against Olympic Champions on the Slopes at Windham

Join Olympic and World Cup champions Tommy Moe, Donna Weinbrecht, Trace Worthington and Andrew Weibrecht at Windham Mountain Resort on Saturday, March 5th, for a fund-raiser to benefit the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation.  These ski legends will be racing for fun, and for funds to help support the American skiers and snowboarders already in training for the 2014 Olympic Games in Russia.  Sign up to race against them in a special NASTAR race.  You won’t beat them, but you’ll have fun, and maybe pick up a tip or two to improve your own turns.  There’s also an Apres Ski Party with a contest for the ugliest ski sweater.   Unfortunately, I can’t join this great event  – on March 6th, I’ll be skiing at Alyeska, Alaska, which just happens to be where Tommy Moe grew up and learned to ski.

It’s Senior Week at Windham Mountain this week.  Anybody 50 or older can get lift tickets for just $29, with lessons starting at $22.  Senior Week is Monday to Friday this week,  January 10th – 14th 2011.  And you’ll be in luck, since the recent snowstorms have produced excellent conditions to ski or snowboard.   Windham also has Ski and Stay packages  at the Winwood Inn for just $69 per night, per person, double occupancy. Senior Week lift tickets are $29 for ages 50-64, $24 for ages 65-74, and FREE for skiers aged 75 and over.  There also are free guided mountain tours three times daily.  Windham is less than three hours from Times Square, in the Catskills.
