Best spot to cheer NYC Marathon runners is Fifth Ave. and 110th St., as they enter Central Park for the finish line

My vote for the best spot to watch and cheer the 43,000 runners in the 2011 ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 6th,  is where they enter Central Park for the final surge to the finish line.  That spot is Fifth Avenue at 110th Street, also known as the Duke Ellington Circle.  While you are cheering, jazz musicians will be entertaining everybody with a free jazz concert, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  That’s when the bulk of the runners pass by.

Expect the elite women to enter Central Park at around 11:30 a.m., and the elite men around noon, followed by everybody else. The Duke Ellington Circle is at the 22 mile marker of the 26.2 mile race, so it’s a great spot to cheer the runners, many of whom are clearly exhausted by that time.  The jazz concert is in partnership with Jazzmobile and the Central Park Conservancy.

As exciting as it is to be at the finish line, it is a chaotic and crowded scene.  The runners need encouragement all along the route, not just at the finish line.  If you do want to be at the finish line, go late, after the crowds and the TV cameras have left.  The runners who take six hours, or even eight hours, to finish, need our encouragement even more than the speedsters.

Download the NYC Marathon course map here.  It’s a great map, complete with the NYC subway stop to get you to your viewing and cheering location of choice, in Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx or Manhattan.  The NYC Marathon is Sunday, November 6, 2011.

What’s your favorite spot to watch and cheer the runners in the 2010 ING NYC Marathon?

John Wayne memorabilia NYCMore than 700 items from the long and legendary career of movie star John Wayne are on display in New York City this weekend before they go on auction in Los Angeles next month.  The treasure trove of memorabilia includes cowboy hats, scripts with handwritten notes, costumes, awards, his American Express card, a beret from the film Green Berets,  and the eye patch he wore as Rooster Cogburn in the original True Grit.  John Wayne died in 1979.  The memorabilia is being put up for sale by his estate.  It is on display at the Fletcher Sinclair Mansion, 2 East 79th  Street, through Sunday, September 25th.  The auction by Heritage Auctions is October 6-7, and you can bid for items online.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is extending its hours for the final days of its extraordinarily popular Costume Institute exhibition, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty.  The exhibit closes on August 7, 2011, and from Thursday, August 4th to closing, the exhibition will remain open daily  until 9 p.m., instead of closing at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and Sunday.  Due to its phenomenal popularity, The Met is offering special entry on Mondays, when the museum is normally closed to the public.  These special Met Monday tickets are $50, and include an audio guide.  Purchase the tickets at the museum, or online.

Also, beginning today, Friday, July 22nd, the exhibition will open an hour early for Museum Members, every day except Mondays.  Another benefit of membership is that you get to skip the lines — and there have been long lines pretty much daily — the Alexander McQueen exhibit has drawn nearly 500,000 visitors since it opened on May 4th.  Museum visitors also can use the extended hours to enjoy other exhibitions and museum spaces, including the Anthony Caro sculptures on view on the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden, one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in NYC.

This is a special kind of R&R — because it could include romance.  The Museum of the City of New York is launching a weekly program of live music, dancing and cocktails on the spacious terrace overlooking Central Park.  The program begins this Wednesday, and continues every  Wednesday, August 31st.  There’s a different performer, duo, trio or quartet each week, all representing the sounds of New York City, including Latin  jazz, classic rock, even funk.  Click here for the full schedule of dancing under the stars at the Museum of the City of New York, every Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Admission is $10 for museum members, $15 for non-members, and includes one free beverage plus entrance to the museum’s exhibitions.  So I’m considering this a FREE deal — pay for museum admission and get the dancing to live music free, or the other way around.  The Museum of the City of New York is at Fifth Avenue and 103rd St.

Just in time to get in shape for Memorial Day and the coming summer — get a free three-day trial membership at Reebok Sports Club.   I found this deal on the Urban Daddy website.  There are two Reebok Sports Club locations in Manhattan, plus one each in Boston, Miami, and Washington, D.C.  So, if you are visiting one of those cities soon, that would be a good deal to work out with your travel sked.
