2013 Tribeca Film Festival_nyconthecheapThe Tribeca Film Festival winds up this weekend with two FREE family events Saturday in the streets of Tribeca.

Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair – Grown-ups can watch local chefs create unique dishes. Kids can watch see a sneak peek of upcoming summer comedy “The Smurfs 2,” and enjoy appearances by cast members in Smurfwear.  There’s also a FREE screening of “The Smurfs” — tickets are first-come, first-served.  The street fair is Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Greenwich Street between Chambers and Hubert Streets.  The screenings are at BMCC Tribeca PAC, 199 Chambers Street.  Event website

Tribeca/ESPN Sports Day – This seventh annual event encourages kids to get active and play ball games. Local athletes, mascots, and sports personalities will be on-site to engage fans Putt a hole in one, throw a touchdown, sharpen your fencing skills, hit the perfect slap shot, watch ultimate frisbee tricks or learn how to throw the perfect pitch, guided by local athletes, team mascots and popular NYC sports personalities. tribeca film festival drive-in_nyconthecheapThe Tribeca Film Festival Outdoor Drive-In Series is back this year, with FREE films tonight, tomorrow and Saturday. The outdoor screenings are at Brookfield Place Plaza just west of the Winter Garden at the World Financial Center, along with family-friendly games and activities inspired by the films being screened, movie trivia contests, costume contests and more. Pre-show activities begin a6t 6 PM and the movie at dusk, approximately 8:15 PM.  Here’s the three night schedule:

  • Thursday, April 18 – Alfred Hitchcok’s classic thriller The Birds.  This is the 50th anniversary of the iconic movie starring Tippi Hedren as a woman chased and threatened by a swirling mob of flesh-eating birds.
  • Friday, April 19th – Tim Burton’s cult classic Beetlejuice.  The film helped turn its two unknown lead actors, Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, into stars.
  • Saturday, April 20th - Lil Bub & Friendz, a new film featuring the made-famous-online cat Lil Bub

This is the 10th annual Tribeca Film Festival, April 17-28, at various spots around lower Manhattan.  Ticket packages start at $39, plus a $5 service fee, directly from Tribeca Film Festival.   As we all know, TFF was started by longtime Tribeca resident and flim legend Robert de Niro.

There are nearly two dozen film premieres, one dozen documentary premieres, and the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival winds up with a special showing of Martin Scorcese’s landmark 91983 film The King of Comedy, newly restored and starring comedian Jerry Lewis and a young actor not known for playing comedy. Can you guess?  Robert de Niro.

http://nyconthecheap.comThe first major NYC street fair of 2012 also marks the end of the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival.  The film festival closes its 11th edition with a FREE all-day street fair on Saturday, April 28th.   The Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair is from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., on Greenwich Street, between Chambers and  Hubert Streets in Tribeca.  The street fair will be dotted with talented professional performers, dancers, stilt walkers, Broadway performances, arts and crafts, face painters, puppet shows, music, games, and more. Students from dozens of New York City schools also will be performing and showing artwork. Tribeca restaurants and merchants will have booths, along with Tribeca community groups.  This is the first major NYC street fair of the season, which drew more than 300,000 people last year.

Tribeca Film Festival www.nyconthecheap.comThe Apple Retail Stores closest to the Tribeca Film Festival are showcasing some of the festival filmmakers in FREE workshops and panel discussions.  Here’s who you can hang out with and learn from on Saturday, April 21st, at the Apple Store on West 14th St. and Eighth Ave –

  • 6 p.m. –  Filmmakers Bradley Rust Gray (The Exploding Girl) and actor Riley Keough (The Runaways) discuss their new thriller, Jack and Diane. The film follows two teenagers who meet in New York City and whose love affair is tested when one must leave for school in Europe.
  • 7 p.m. –  Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock (The Greatest Movie Ever Sold and Super Size Me), actor Will Arnett (Up All Night), and producer Ben Silverman discuss Mansome, Spurlock’s new documentary on men’s grooming habits.

Free Tribeca Film Festival screening Sunday

Attend a FREE screening and panel discussion of the new Ron Howard film “When You Find Me”, on Sunday, April 22nd.  It’s part of the Tribeca Talk series of the Tribeca Film Festival.  The production is the first Hollywood film inspired by a photo contest.  The discussion panel after the screening includes filmmakers Petter Ringbom and Seth Keal, and Canon USA’s Chuck Westfall, talking about filmmaking and photography.  The program is sponsored by Canon.  The event is at 2:30 PM at SVA Theater 2, 333 W 23rd Street, between Eighth and Ninth Avenues.  There are no reservations, so get there by 2:25 PM to get a seat.

  • 7 p.m. –  actor Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) and director Brad Hall (SNL) discuss their short film, Picture Paris, about a suburban mom’s plans for a life-changing trip to Paris soon after her son leaves for college. When her plans go hilariously awry, she finds herself wondering if she’ll ever have what she really desires: love, passion, revenge…and Paris.
  • 8 p.m. — director Lynn Shelton (Humpday) discusses her new film, Your Sister’s Sister. The story is about sibling rivalry, a death in the family, and surprising revelations, and stars Emily Blunt,Mark Duplass and Rosemarie DeWitt.

Free all-day soccer festival, clinic in Tribeca

  • Some of New York’s most recognizable professional athletes, musicians, actors and fashion stars facing off in a celebrity soccer exhibition starting at 2:00 PM;
  • A youth soccer showcase featuring skills clinics, games and competitions focusing on speed, agility, power and accuracy throughout the day;
