Free musical performances at NYPL teaches kids about butterflies and bugs

posted by Evelyn Kanter

The Tale of Flutterby and Piggle is the name of an interactive play, with puppets and music, explains why insects, including butterflies, are the coolest creatures around.  The play is being performed at various branches of the New York Public Library part of the 100th birthday celebration of the iconic and world-famous main branch NYPL building on Fifth Avenue and 42nd St.  It’s free, fun, and for ages five and older.  The performances are presented by the Central Park Zoo Wildlife Theatre. I’m glad to see the word ‘flutterby’ in the title of a story for children — that’s what my own daughter called butterflies when she was three or four years old and got the real word tongue-twisted, and  I really think that’s a better name for them.  Here’s the schedule for the free performances at NYPL branches in June and July:

  • Kingsbridge |  Wednesday, June 8 | 4 p.m.
  • New Dorp | Thursday, June 9 | 3:30 p.m.
  • West Farms | Monday, June 13 | 3:30 p.m.
  • Hudson Park | Thursday, June 16 | 3:30 p.m.
  • Spuyten Duyvil |  Wednesday, June 22 | 3:30 p.m.
