cherry blossons BBGSakura Matsuri is the annual cherry blossom festival celebrated both in Japan and in Brooklyn. More than 200 cherry trees line Cherry Walk and the Cherry Esplanade in the Brooklyn Botanical Garden.  When they are in full bloom each spring, it is a fairyland of pink blossoms and green grass.

Celebrate the blossoms and the culture of Japan at the Sakura Matsuri cherry blossom festival this weekend, with a two-day schedule of events including Ikebena flower arranging, wood block printing, dance performances, and hands-on workshops for the kids.  Take a picnic lunch.  Take the subway, which stops at the entrance — IRT #2 or #3 to Eastern Parkway.

Check the BBG website for the full schedule and to purchase tickets - I recommend you buy tickets online and avoid the lines.  The Sakura Matsuri festival is rain or shine.  Let’s hope for shine.

anatm-nodate-blk The American Museum of Natural History has two new sleepover dates for May.  This is the opportunity for kids to spend a night at the museum, in the real life version version of the popular movie.

As the doors close and the lights dim, participants head out with flashlights in search of adventure, which could mean a face-to-face meeting with a 65-million-year-old T. rex in the Hall of Dinosaurs, or hanging out with the butterflies in The Butterfly Conservatory.  In May, sleepover guests will see a special screening of the film Flight of the Butterflies, about the epic 3,000-mile journey of monarch butterflies, in the LeFrak IMAX Theater.

Kids get to climb into their sleeping bags beneath the 94-foot-long blue whale, next to the Alaskan brown bear, or at the base of a volcanic formation.  The overnight adventure costs $129 per person and includes an IMAX film, evening snack and light breakfast, and guided tour of the museum with flashlights.  Check in at 5:45 p.m., and check out at 9 a.m. next morning.

The next AMNH sleepovers are:

  • Friday, May 17, 6 pm to Saturday, May 18, 9 am
  • Friday, May 31, 6 pm to Saturday, June 1, 9am

Space is limited, so make your reservation ASAP. Email sleepovers@amnh.org with “Notification List” in the subject line.

The week of April 22-26, 2013 is National Parks Week, and as always, entry to all U.S. National Parks and other historic sites operated by the National Park Service is FREE for the week.  Take advantage by visiting the National Parks in New York City and nearby, including the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace at 28 East 30th St., Grants Tomb, Gateway National Park in Brooklyn and Queens, and the Vanderbilt Mansion Historical Site in Hyde Park, in the Hudson Valley.  And, of course, national parks a bit further away, including Yellowstone and Yosemite

  • Remember, the Statue of Liberty is closed through July 4th, and Ellis Island is closed until further notice, because of the damage caused by Hurriacne Sandy, also called Supestorm Sandy, last October

Click here for the entire list of fee-free national parks.  The U.S. National Park Service operates millions of acres of picture-postcard views and educational experiences in hundreds of national parks, historic sites, and heritage areas.  An annual pass for a carload is $80, or  $10 for a lifetime pass for seniors.    There are additional fee-free national park days and weekends in 2013 after National Parks Week -

  • August 25 – National Park Service Birthday
  • September 28 – -National Public Lands Day
  • November 9-11 – Veterans Day weekend

This is less than in 2012.  Blame sequestration.

June 9 (Get Outdoors Day), September 29 (National Public Lands Day), and November 10 to 12 (Veterans Day weekend). Many park-related hotels, restaurants, gift shops, and tour operators offer special discounts on fee-free days, too.
