Barnes & Noble summer reading programAgain this year, Barnes & Noble is offering one FREE book for kids 12 and under, to encourage summer reading.  The program operates this way – write down the titles of eight or ten books on a special form, bring it into a B&N bookstore, and choose  one free book from selected titles.  You and the kids have until the end of August  to bring in your list of ten books read, and pick out your prize.

Click here to download the Barnes & Noble summer reading program form, or pick one up at your local B&N store. You don’t even have to buy the books — although that is encouraged.  Just list the book title and whether you would recommend it to other parents or grandparents.  Books are sorted by recommended ages, and there’s another section for award winners, such as the perennial favorite children’s book, Charlotte’s Web, and a couple of favorites of my own young grandchildren, including Pinkalicious and Captain Underpants.

This is a terrific program, since it encourages reading when school is not in session.

anatm-nodate-blk The American Museum of Natural History has two new sleepover dates for May.  This is the opportunity for kids to spend a night at the museum, in the real life version version of the popular movie.

As the doors close and the lights dim, participants head out with flashlights in search of adventure, which could mean a face-to-face meeting with a 65-million-year-old T. rex in the Hall of Dinosaurs, or hanging out with the butterflies in The Butterfly Conservatory.  In May, sleepover guests will see a special screening of the film Flight of the Butterflies, about the epic 3,000-mile journey of monarch butterflies, in the LeFrak IMAX Theater.

Kids get to climb into their sleeping bags beneath the 94-foot-long blue whale, next to the Alaskan brown bear, or at the base of a volcanic formation.  The overnight adventure costs $129 per person and includes an IMAX film, evening snack and light breakfast, and guided tour of the museum with flashlights.  Check in at 5:45 p.m., and check out at 9 a.m. next morning.

The next AMNH sleepovers are:

  • Friday, May 17, 6 pm to Saturday, May 18, 9 am
  • Friday, May 31, 6 pm to Saturday, June 1, 9am

Space is limited, so make your reservation ASAP. Email sleepovers@amnh.org with “Notification List” in the subject line.

The Berenstain Bears are a perennial kid-pleaser, even more pleasing when the characters jump off the book pages and onto the theater stage.  Take the kids to see Mama Bear, Papa Bear, Sister Bear and Brother Bear live, in a kid-friendly theater a few blocks from Lincoln Center.   These live performances are based on the well-loved books by Stan and Jan Berenstain — and approved by the authors, ensuring you get a genuine Berenstain Bears experience and not an ‘almost’.   Through March 12 only,  tickets are $30 instead of the usual $45 with a special voucher deal from Juice in the City.  Take you pick — that’s either $15 off, or a 33% discount.   Use the tickets before mid-August 2012.  The Berenstain Bears are on stage singing and dancing, and the storyline is as relevant as ever: Sister Bear grapples with friendships, Brother Bear’s having a hard time with grades, Papa Bear’s sweet tooth is getting the best of him, and Mama Bear is like mamas everywhere —  she’s just trying to keep it all together in the most loving way possible.  My kids loved the Berenstain Bears when they were little — as much as I loved reading them the stories. Too bad they aren’t still young enough for me to take them to The Berenstain Bears LIVE.  Find more voucher deals — from Juice in the City, Plum District, Mamasource and more — on the NYC OTC Daily Deals page.  Click here, on the Daily Deals tab at the top of the page, or on the cute little computer on the left side of the page.
