Newark rated worst NYC airport

If you are shopping for airfare deals for a late summer, fall or winter getaway, you should know the bad news about Newark Liberty Airport and how it compares with JFK and LaGuardia.  The Wall St. Journal names Newark as the one airport to avoid.

According to Crain’s New YorkBusiness, Newark flights cost the most — The average fare for a round-trip or one-way ticket in the first quarter for flights at Newark Liberty International—the most expensive of the three airports—was $469.82 compared with $422 a year ago. The average fare over the same time period at JFK was $383.18, compared with $343.94 a year ago, while the fare at La Guardia was $348.99, up from $318.09 a year ago.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in the Wall St. Journal, nearly half of the most delayed flights to and from all US airports go through Newark, with an average delay of just under 90 minutes.  The worst delays are after 3 p.m., and the impact delays flights in airports busier than Newark, including Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas and Los Angeles, and even smaller ones such as Kansas City and Pittsburgh.  Click here for the list of the most delayed flights at Newark Airport.

Three websites I recommend for tracking flight delays are Flightstats, which lets you track delays by airport,  Flightcomm and Flightaware.

Airlines are gearing up for the summer travel season with new flights into and out of NYC airports.  Here are some new flight options that might help your planning for a weekend getaway or longer vacation –

JetBlue now has four daily flights between Newark-Liberty and Boston

Airberlin now offers four non-stop flights a week between JFK and Berlin, on comfortable Airbus A330-200 planes.  The non-stops mean you don’t have to change planes in Frankfurt or Munich anymore.  The non-stops are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

Cathay Pacific now has four daily flights from JFK to Vancouver and on to Hong Kong.  I flew the NY-Vancouver route portion earlier this year, and am suitably impressed by Cathay Pacific service and food.

South African Airways now is flying twice a day non-stop between JFK and Johannesburg, departing at 11:15 a.m. and at 8:35 p.m.

As soon as I hear about airfare sales and deals — on these or other airlines — I’ll let you know.
