For the 40th consecutive year, Hunter Mountain is hosting the FDNY Race, to raise money for charity including the NY Firefighters Burn Center Foundation. The race is open to any New York City firefighter. Teams dressed in helmets and full turn-out gear attempt to ski or snowboard through a race course while carrying a 50 foot fire hose. Teams are awarded 1st through 5th place, as well as “Slowest Time”, “Fastest All-Snowboard Team” and “Fastest All-Retired Team”. The FDNY Race is Tuesday, Januay 29th. Winning teams earn a chance to compete in the East Coast Firefighters Race the next day.
It’s great fun, for a good cause. In 40 years, the FDNY races have raised more than $750,000 for charity. Event organizer is retired FDNY fireman Joe Jove, who is one of a group of skiing firemen friends who thought up this race 40 years ago, and has participated nearly every year since, either racing or organizing, or both. Like many great ideas, this one has been copied. There now are many such races at other ski and snowboard resorts around the USA by other firefighter groups, also charity fund-raisers.
There’s a party in the base lodge after the FDNY race. Stop by and thank New York’s Bravest for their service to New York City, during Hurricane Sandy, at the World Trade Center on 9/11, and every day of the year, 24/7.
Hunter Mt. is two hours north of Times Square in the Catskills. I’ve been skiing there since college.

Try before you buy is the idea of the FREE ski and snowboard demo days at Hunter Mountain this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, December 8 and 9. Representatives from major ski, snowboard and boot manufacturers will be on hand with all the latest gear for skiers and riders. A credit card swipe is required to guarantee that you’ll return the new boards after a run or two. Some of the ski brands available to test drive include Atomic, K2, Salomon, Rossignol, Burton and Never Summer. If you like something enough to buy it on the spot, you’ll get a $50 credit for purchase at Hunter’s gear shop. Event website.
You are asked to take no more than two runs on each demo. My advice for demos — take a few runs on your own gear before you demo, so you can compare, and always demo the same runs so you can compare. And take notes so you remember, because after the third or fourth pair of skis, boots or snowboards, you won’t remember.
There’s also a demo day at Okemo on Saturday, December 8. Read the full NYCOTC posting here.
Red Hook, Hudson Valley — $249 for two at a charming Victorian bed and breakfast lovingly restored by its owners. Be sure to visit the historic Red Hook Diner, which dates from the 1920s and looks like an old-fashioned railroad car. It’s the kind of roadside diner we ate in before the fast foot chains took over the world.
Hunter, Catskills — Two-night stay for two or four, including a family-friendly Geocaching package, scenic skyride and more, at the upscale Kaatskill Mountain Lodge at the base of Hunter Mountain ski and summer resort. From $220 for two, $336 for four people.
Atlantic City — $37-$59 per night Sundays through Thursdays at a top New Orleans themed hotel and casino on the Boardwalk. Book by July 25th for stays through December, except for some peak holiday black-out dates. There’s also a rooftop pool, which you probably wouldn’t want to swim in during December.
