Boo! Sleep in a haunted hotel or haunted room, with discounts that won’t haunt your budget. It’s Haunted Hotel Week at Groupon Getaways, so these voucher deals will save you enough money to afford to buy some flashlights and batteries before you check in.
You’ll recognize the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, which was Stephen King’s inspiration for The Shining. Locals say it’s a hub of paranormal activity, with staff reporting hearing the distinct sounds of children playing when there aren’t any around, liquor bottles inexplicably flying off the shelves, and of piano keys moving without assistance from anything or anyone else. If you want to stay here — probably other than on Halloween itself — buy the voucher, and save enough to buy some flashlights and batteries. Stanley Hotel- $89 for one night stay plus one ghost tour ticket (up to $224 value)
New Orleans may be the most haunted city in the USA, filled with lurid tales of ghosts of murder and suicide victims, and even those of Civil War heroes prowling their former homes. So stay in the historic Maison DePuy in the historic French Quarter, and hear about the stories, in between visits to jazz and Zydeco music clubs, and enjoying the city’s world famous cuisine. The DePuy features a saltwater pool and other amenities. Maison Dupuy- $99 for one night Sun-Thurs stay including full american breakfast for two (up to $171 value)
There’s also a deal for Captain Grant’s Inn in Preston, Connecticut. Built in 1754, there are guest reports of loud knocking, multiple sightings of mysterious ghostly apparitions of a woman and her two children, and, spookily enough, faint, disembodied child-like voices. Captain Grant’s, 1754 – $139 for Two Night Stay & Ghost Hunting Lesson ($278 Value)
Also in the Northeast, you can stay at The Lucerne Inn, in the appropriately named village of Dedham, Maine. Back in the early 1800s, farmer Nathan Phillips began taking weary travelers into his home, offering them a warm bed and a stable for their horses. But when an opportunistic horseman took advantage of Phillips’s hospitality, a dispute resulted in the death of both men and the innkeeper’s philandering wife. The spirits in Room 8— where the innkeeper apparently caught his wife with their paying guest — are said to haunt the majestic, lakeside hotel, casting shadows on the walls at night and murmuring faintly behind close doors. Lucerne Inn- $159 for Two Night Stay in a Junior Suite with Bottle of Wine for Two ($318 Value)
These deals will run through 11:59p central, Monday, October 31. BTW — a few years ago, I slept in a haunted room in a Scottish castle. It was the room of the daughter of the lord of the castle, who killed herself because daddy didn’t approve of her romance with the stableboy. The story may have been the inspiration for the classic Emily Bronte novel Wuthering Heights, and the classic 1939 movie starring Sir Lawrence Olivier as Heathcliff and Merle Oberon as doomed Cathy. I was told she’s a friendly ghost, but even so, I kept one light on. She never appeared, and I slept soundly through the night.
