cherry blossons BBGSakura Matsuri is the annual cherry blossom festival celebrated both in Japan and in Brooklyn. More than 200 cherry trees line Cherry Walk and the Cherry Esplanade in the Brooklyn Botanical Garden.  When they are in full bloom each spring, it is a fairyland of pink blossoms and green grass.

Celebrate the blossoms and the culture of Japan at the Sakura Matsuri cherry blossom festival this weekend, with a two-day schedule of events including Ikebena flower arranging, wood block printing, dance performances, and hands-on workshops for the kids.  Take a picnic lunch.  Take the subway, which stops at the entrance — IRT #2 or #3 to Eastern Parkway.

Check the BBG website for the full schedule and to purchase tickets - I recommend you buy tickets online and avoid the lines.  The Sakura Matsuri festival is rain or shine.  Let’s hope for shine.

best nyc irish pubs for st. patrick's dayEverybody is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, but these traditional NYC Irish pubs are Irish year-round, which means friendly atmosphere and great beer and ale..

McSorley’s has been at the same location in the East Village since 1854, and hasn’t changed its decor or style since. The wooden bar has been burnished to a deep shine by generations of elbows, and the walls are cluttered with museum quality memorabilia, including an original ‘wanted’ poster for Abe Lincoln’s assassination.  McSorley’s is at 15 E 7th St., between Second and Third Aves.

Also in Manhattan – Playwright’s in Midtown.

Mug’s Ale House is an old-fashioned neighborhood bar in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, with a modern list of draft beers and ales that includes local micro-brews like Bluepoint Toasted Lager and imports from Germany, Belgium, and — of course — Irish Guinness.  Mugs is at 125 Bedford Ave. at North Tenth Street.

Also in Brooklyn – Ryan Maguires,
