Barnes & Noble summer reading programAgain this year, Barnes & Noble is offering one FREE book for kids 12 and under, to encourage summer reading.  The program operates this way – write down the titles of eight or ten books on a special form, bring it into a B&N bookstore, and choose  one free book from selected titles.  You and the kids have until the end of August  to bring in your list of ten books read, and pick out your prize.

Click here to download the Barnes & Noble summer reading program form, or pick one up at your local B&N store. You don’t even have to buy the books — although that is encouraged.  Just list the book title and whether you would recommend it to other parents or grandparents.  Books are sorted by recommended ages, and there’s another section for award winners, such as the perennial favorite children’s book, Charlotte’s Web, and a couple of favorites of my own young grandchildren, including Pinkalicious and Captain Underpants.

This is a terrific program, since it encourages reading when school is not in session.

Avoid the $79 fee with these two secret FREE deals from Amazon. Join Amazon Student for free and get the free shipping benefits of Amazon Prime. My  college student son told me about this deal, and when I checked around Amazon’s website, I found  a similar free shipping deal if you join join Amazon Mom for free. The best part about these Amazon freebies is that you don’t have to be a student, mom, dad, grammie or caregiver to join either program to get free shipping.Essentially,  they are available to anybody who signs up. Amazon Prime offers two-day free shipping and other perks, and costs $79 a year for unlimited free two-day shipping.  But why pay $79 if you can get it for free?

Amazon Student offers free shipping for one year on textbooks and anything else Amazon sells.  Just enter your school and major, but since Amazon does not ask for a student ID number, anybody can sign up. Ditto Amazon Mom — which also offers 30% discounts on diapers, wipes and such, and free shipping on anything you buy, from the Amazon Baby Store or not. NYC on the Cheap Evelyn Kanter websiteAnd another one bites the dust — another independent, privately -owned local resource is closing in NYC.   This time, it’s Manhattan Theater Source in the Village, a small theater for emerging playrights and actors.  It closes forever at the end of December, and must clear the stacks and storage areas of its extensive collection of gently-used theatre books, sripts and screenplays.  There’s a one-day sale on Sunday, December 4th, from noon to 6 PM, with everything priced at just $1 and $2. Name a playwright – Sophocles, Shakespeare, Sondheim, Shephard, Schaffer, and many, many more from A-Z.  They’re all here, plus books on acting, costume and set design, and some costumes and theater memorabilia also is on sale.  The goodbye sale is also a party, with free family fun activities throughout the day,  including holiday decorating, and free entertainment by local musicians, some of whom play in Broadway shows.  Manhattan Theater Source is at 177 MacDougal St. in the Village.  Thanks to Jacqueline Margolis of the theater group Instant Shakespeare for alerting me to this very special — and sad — going out of business sale.

NYC on the Cheap Evelyn Kanter websiteComedian Lewis Black brings his dark humor to Barnes & Noble in Tribeca on Wednesday, November 2nd, for a FREE appearance that is part performance, part promotion of his new book, I’m Dreaming of a Black Christmas.  He’ll be discussing his take on the dark side of the biggest holiday of the year, and signing his book.  The free event is at 6 PM, but get there by 5:45 to be sure you can get in.  The Tribecca Barnes & Noble is at 97 Warren St.  And while you are there, look for my book, Peaceful Places New York City, a guide to quiet, tranquil places that are the opposite of the frenetic pace and humor of Lewis Black, one of my favorite comedians.

NYC on the Cheap Evelyn Kanter websiteThe stories of Sholem Aleichem are touching tales about family, love, life and hope.  The Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof is based on a Sholem Aleichem story.  His granddaughter, Bel Kaufman, is giving a free lecture on the world famous Yiddish writer at Hunter College on Tuesday, November 1st.  It’s part of Hunter’s The Writing Center free fall events focusing on writing and writers.  Kaufman is a Hunter graduate, and author of Up The Down Staircase, a humorous look at her time as a NYC school teacher.  Humor runs in the family.  The event is free, but please RSVP to ensure space — 212.772.4292 or twcce@hunter.cuny.edu.  The lecture is at 7 p.m., at the Hunter College Writing Center, Park Avenue at 68th St.

NYC daily deals, NYC on th CheapKids and teens age eighteen and less are getting amnesty from overdue books, CDs and DVDs — and the late fines that go with them — from the New York Public Library.  This special amnesty program is through Halloween, October 31st.  No tricks — and a treat for the more than 140,000 NYC school kids who cannot borrow books, CDs or DVDs from the New York Public Library because they have more than $15 of overdue fines.  That’s one-third of the total number of school kids with library cards in Manhattan, Bronx and Staten Island (note — Brooklyn and Queens are not part of the NYPL system, and this NYPL amnesty does not apply). So clean out the closets, dig through the bookshelves, check under the bed, and return those overdue Harry Potter books and Hannah Montana CDs to the library for FREE.  Incoming NYPL president Dr. Tony Marx says “we want you reading and we want you in the library”.   A big NYC on the Cheap thank you to McGraw-Hill, which donated $300,000 to the NYPL to cover the cost of the amnesty.  McGraw-Hill is one of the largest textbook publishers.
