Freebie Friday: Family Fridays at MoMath – Solve puzzles, family-style, and learn how math affects everything, from music to space flight. 6:30pm, FREE.   The National Museum of Mathematics is at 11 E. 26th St.

Freebie FridayFREE Grand Central Neighborhood Tour. Every Friday at 12:30, docents from the Grand Central Partnership guide you through the history of the fabled Grand Central Terminal and some equally-fabled nearby landmarks including the Chrysler Building.  There are no tickets, no reservations.  Just meet at Sculpture court at 120 Park Avenue (southwest corner of East 42nd Street).  Tour is 90 minutes.

Amateur Night at the ApolloApollo Open House – An afternoon of FREE events celebrating Black music and musicians, at the legendary theater in Harlem. See the recent NYCOTC posting for full information. 

lunar new year nycCelebrate Culture! Spotlight Asia: Year Of The Rooster at the Museum of Natural HistoryNoon to 4pm, free with museum admission

  • Design a rooster shadow puppet with Chinese Theatre Works
  • Color your own rooster nengajo, or New Year postcard, and have your name written in Japanese katakana characters with Japan Society.
  • Try brush-painting and calligraphy with artist Sungsook Hong Setton and The Korea Society.
  • Explore a Vietnamese rooster lantern display and try your hand at Dông Ho bird woodcut painting with the Institute for Vietnamese Culture and Education.
  • Create rooster and other bird models (or designs with volunteers from OrigamiUSA.

lunar new year nycChinese New Year Family Celebration at the China Institute  – New Year-themed family workshops and activities including dumpling making, storytelling, and lantern-making in the afternoon, 1pm to 4pm. In the evening, adults and families alike are welcome to a party featuring a lion dance, food, and live music, 4pm to 7pm. Note that each event is ticketed separately, at $40 for adults and $5 for kids.  China Institute is at 125 East 65th St., between Park and Lexington Avenues.

lunar new year nycChinatown Lunar New Year Parade & Festival The biggest street party of the year, with Lion Dancers, firecrackers and more, 1pm to 4:30pm.  Best viewing spot is on Allen St. between Canal and Grand Streets.

lunar new year nycLunar New Year Festival: Year of the Rooster at Met MuseumOrigami workshops, puppetry,music and dance performances and more, including curated gallery tours, 11am to 5pm.  FREE with museum admission.  The Met Museum is at Fifth Ave. and 82nd St.
