There’s so much happening this last official weekend of summer in New York City. Here are some of the best ways to take a bite out of the Big Apple without nibbling into your budget –
Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit — this annual showcase of top local artists and artisans festival takes over the sidewalks on University Place, from East 12th Street to East Third Street, including around the perimeter of Washington Square Park. This is not ordinary street fair schlock. These are juried and vetted artists. Today through Monday noon to 6 p.m., and again next weekend. Event website
Brazilian Day Celebration – Mardi Gras in Manhattan all weekend, with Brazilian food, music and non-stop dancing by people in fabulous costumes. There’s a parade on 46th St. on Saturday, and a street fair on Sixth Avneue on Sunday. Get the details on the Brazilian Day website.
West Indian American Day Carnival 2012 — The sounds of Soca and Reggae and the aroma of meat patties goat curry takes over Eastern Parkway, from Schenectady Avenue to Flatbush Avenue Extension on Monday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Of course, there will be dancing, too, also by people in fabulous costumes. Event website — warning — you’ll be blasted out of your socks by the music that starts the instant you open the website, so lower the volume if you are in public.
Richmond County Fair – Staten Island’s own festival includes performing dog shows, an 1800s style flea circus and magic show, and more. This is a ticketed event at Historic Richmondtown. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for 65+, and free for children under 30 inches tall. Event website.
