The National Park Service turns 96 on August 25th, and is celebrating its birthday by inviting everybody to share a photo or video of a family vacation or other visit to a national park, on a special birthday website, NPS Birthday. You can also just share birthday wishes, including thanking the Park Rangers who staff the national parks and historic sites from coast to coast, from NYC’s Statue of Liberty and Grant’s Tomb to California’s Yosemite National Park. There are birthday events planned in nearly every NPS destination. Take the kids on a snorkel adventure, bike ride, kayak tour, hike, or archeological dig. See ablacksmith demo, living history encampment, or Native American concert. One big event is the Sixth Annual BioBlitz at Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, in which thousands of families join scientists to identify species of plants, animals, microbes, fungi and other organisms.
