New York City has a reputation for being expensive. Not true.  Here are five ways you can enjoy NYC for FREE today, Sunday, August 25th with parades, performances and street fairs  –

Manhattan — Pakistan Independence Day Parade and Street Fair — The annual parade marches south on Madison Avenue from 37th to 23rd Streets, beginning at 1 p.m., and ends with a giant street fair along Madison Park.

Manhattan — Amsterdam Avenue Fair — Looking is free, buying crafts and food from the vendors is not.  Noon to 5 p.m. on Amsterdam Avenue, between 79th and 86th Streets.

Governors Island — Africa Film Festival Family Day Celebration — A day of arts and crafts workshops, storytelling, dance and double Dutch performances, on Governors Island.  It’s FREE, and so are the ferries to the island from Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.  Event website.

Queens — Music in the Garden — Favorite pop tunes from the 1940s to the 1990s will be performed FREE at 6 p.m. in the Queens Botanical Garden. Bring your own seating. The Queens Botanical Garden is FREE after 4 p.m. Sundays, so go early and smell the roses before the concert.

Find more free things to do on this last weekend of August on the NYC on the Cheap Summer Outdoors Calendar page.
