Sleep cheap in New York City at a new hotel offering four-person room shares for $69 per bed per night, for the month of August. The OUT NYC is the city’s first so-called “straight-friendly” hotel, a few blocks west of Times Square. The sleep share rooms are European hostel style, with two bunk beds, each with its own flat-screen TV, privacy curtains, private cubbies in additional to a closet, and a private bath. Considering that regular rates at The OUT  NYC start at around $250 for a standard room, this is a good deal if you are traveling solo and don’t mind bunking with strangers. OUT NYC also has its own on-site nightclub. Click here for other NYC hotel deals, starting at $75 for a private room.

  1. Placing more than three unrelated people in a room is against the law. Hostels were closed-down rapidly since May, 2011 for such moves. SHould you book here, do not payt in advance as this property is putting itself in danger of being vacated (in its entirety, NOT just the dorm rooms) in the wee hours of the night by the Department of Buildings. All it takes is a complaint call to 311 to have the Mayor’s Office of Special Enforcement close-in and shut this establishment down. BEWARE – HOSTELS are NOT legal in NYC at the moment, nor are HOTELS that place more than 3 unrelated people in any given room at any given time.

  2. The Out is not a hostel. It is a fully licensed hotel with more than 100 standard rooms and just a few of these shared accommodations. Even so, I appreciate your warning and concern, and am checking with the hotel’s management and the NYC Dept. of Consumer Affairs for the rules and regulations.

  3. Allen —

Here’s the email I received from a hotel representative in answer to your comment, which I forwarded to them for comment — quoting directly —

“THE OUT NYC offers Quad rooms, which are luxury shared accommodations. The hotel monitors bookings to ensure that no more than three guests that do not know each other are in one of these rooms at any time.”

Thanks again for your comment, concern and warning about room shares.
