http://nyconthecheap.comRelease your inner cheapskate with these FREE events and activities in New York City,  this weekend after the spectacular free Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks show.  Choose from family events or those more suited to grown-ups only –

CBGB Festival — The legendary punk-rock club on the Bowery showcases up and coming bands and performers in more than two dozen venues around New York City all weekend, most of them ticketed.  The big FREE event is a 3 p.m concert on Saturday, July 7 at Central Park Rumsey Field, featuring  Guided By Voices, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Cloud Nothings and more. Central Park Family Day — Part of the summer-long Summerstage events, a whacky FREE performance by Justin Roberts of Not Ready for Naptime Players, plus puppetry and arts and crafts workshops and more.  Sunday, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Naumberg Bandshell, mid-park around 72nd St.  Event website.

Kayaking on the Hudson River — catch a cool breeze and great views while you get some exercise.  Downtown Boathouse provides FREE kayaks on weekends at Pier 40, Pier 96 and at the pier at 72nd St.  Hours vary by location, but it’s generally from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and you are limited to about 30 minutes.  Lines can be long, so get there early.  You will be issued a lifevest and get some brief instruction.  Downtown Boathouse website

Kayaking on the East River — Brooklyn Bridge Boathouse also sends you out for FREE on weekends and holidays, from Brooklyn Bridge Park.  Website.

Brooklyn Museum –Target Free Saturday is always the first Saturday of the month.  FREE
