Be sure to visit the historic Red Hook Diner, which dates from the 1920s and looks like an old-fashioned railroad car. It’s the kind of roadside diner we ate in before the fast foot chains took over the world.
Hunter, Catskills — Two-night stay for two or four, including a family-friendly Geocaching package, scenic skyride and more, at the upscale Kaatskill Mountain Lodge at the base of Hunter Mountain ski and summer resort. From $220 for two, $336 for four people.
Atlantic City — $37-$59 per night Sundays through Thursdays at a top New Orleans themed hotel and casino on the Boardwalk. Book by July 25th for stays through December, except for some peak holiday black-out dates. There’s also a rooftop pool, which you probably wouldn’t want to swim in during December.
