NYC Cheap Shopping: Trader Joes opens, Barnes & Noble closes

The Upper West Side is on a roller coaster ride for shoppers trying to find the best NYC bargains and deals. The newest Trader Joes is set to open at 72nd St. and Broadway on Sept. 20, confirmed by shopping website The Shophound.  The new TJs is blocks from Fairway and Zabar’s, and across the street from Gray’s Papaya, turning the Upper West Side into a mecca for foodie shoppers. At the same time, Barnes & Noble announces it is closing its gigantic four-floor store at 66th and Broadway, at the end of 2010.  That’s a loss for more than just us bookies and fans of free wi-fi, since the store became the anchor of a revitalized Lincoln Center, with Pottery Barn, Raymor & Flanagan, Gap and Gracious Home and Bed Bath & Beyond all within a few blocks, along with the Apple Store.
