Manhattan Bridge is 100 Years Old

Manhattan Bridge 100th Birthday

Some of the best bargains in The Big Apple are the city’s famous bridges.  The Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan Bridge, the Williamsburg Bridge, Queensboro Bridge, also called the 59th St. Bridge — FREE.  So when one of these NYC icons celebrates its 100th birthday, it’s worth writing about.

Today, December 31, 2009, marks the 100th anniversary of the official opening of the Manhattan Bridge, linking Manhattan and Brooklyn.   No celebrations are planned, because city officials are busy with other things this weekend, including the world-famous New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square.  It’s just one more example of how the Manhattan Bridge doesn’t get respect.  In an article today, The New York Times calls it the Rodney Dangerfield of NYC bridges.
